Legal Policy International Limited (LPI) is a specialist international consultancy providing policy advice on high legal content foreign policy and national security issues. Working through a global network of associates, contributors and experts, it brings strategic judgement, political insight, technical expertise and a problem-solving ethos to the table. It works either as sole adviser or as part of a wider advisory team, complementing the expertise of others, providing critical insight into high legal content issues that engage policy makers and corporate leaders at the highest level.
LPI's founding Director, Sir Daniel Bethlehem KCMG QC, is a former principal Legal Adviser of the United Kingdom Foreign & Commonwealth Office, serving in this post from May 2006 to May 2011. Prior to this, he had more than 20 years private sector experience advising governments, international organisations, corporations, non-governmental organisations and individuals on issues across the foreign policy spectrum. Other personnel bring parallel governmental, international institutional and private sector experience, with expertise ranging from counter-terrorism and military operations to international criminal justice and dispute settlement negotiations.
LPI is incorporated in England, with core representation in London and Washington and a wider network of associates, contributors and experts worldwide. Its operating ethos is one of confidentiality and discretion, subject to a rigorous framework of ethical and conflict of interest principles.
As a policy advisory consultancy, LPI does not provide legal or litigation advice. Where this is required, LPI will often be able to advise on appropriate legal counsel with standing and expertise in the relevant jurisdiction/s. In such cases, LPI will be well placed to secure the provision of such advice and, as appropriate, to oversee or manage any litigation. In circumstances in which LPI personnel or associates are themselves admitted to practise law in the jurisdiction/s concerned, including in respect of proceedings before international tribunals, LPI is able to facilitate the separate instruction of the individual/s in question in accordance with the relevant Bar regulations.
